De Profundis Clamavi: Serge Lutens De Profundis

Writing about an item that I’ve coveted a great deal is always an experience that I savor. In this case I have been ruminating on my thoughts for over two months eagerly making notes and awaiting the arrival of an extravagant treat, a full bottle of Serge Lutens De Profundis. I am admittedly new to the perfume world, but after tentatively dipping my toes into the pond I have fallen in headfirst. Since then I have been smelling as many perfumes as possible and jotting notes down in a Moleskine notebook with the aim of refining my palette, gaining a better understanding of how notes play together and how they work with my chemistry. I’m sure any perfume-ista will tell you that they have a soft spot for a specific perfume house or two. In my budding experience as a fragrance fanatic, that house is unquestionably Serge Lutens.

As a lover of intrigue and the macabre, I relish the sense of wonder and mystery Lutens manages to weave around his creations. Perhaps most so with De Profundis. Released in 2011 and created by Christopher Sheldrake for the line of Palais Royal exclusives, this fragrance seems to evoke a wide and varied array of responses in those who smell it from distaste and malaise to introspection and serenity. In typical Lutens fashion, De Profundis was released with an explanation of the inspiration behind the fragrance: an essay by Oscar Wilde written during his imprisonment that in turn alludes to Psalm 130 and a poem by Charles Baudelaire from Les Fleurs du Mal that very poignantly addresses death. Unfortunately the inspiration behind a fragrance can often color perception, particularly when it grapples with such intangible concepts. Fragrance is indeed subjective: what one dislikes another may adore … and I am madly in love with De Profundis.

Given the inspiration for De Profundis, I expected a flat and mournful fragrance upon application. To the contrary the perfume soars with bright green notes immediately upon application, mellows into the damp smell of soil and long since blossomed flowers (violet, chrysanthemum, carnation and lilac) and lingers on the skin with the unmistakable fragrance of incense. De Profundis seems equally perfect for a grey spring or late autumn day, though I love it so much that I have happily forged ahead and applied it in bright and sunny weather. This fragrance manages to achieve the sweet smell of rain drenched soil with just blooming greenery as much as it evokes the smell of autumnal decay.

Even aside from the manifold macabre inspirations, I have never encountered a fragrance that evokes more imagery than De Profundis. Smelling this perfume tells a story unique to she or he who wears it. Given the sombre funerary implications of the notes, I'm immediately reminded of a walk through one of my favorite places on earth, la cimetière du Père-Lachaise, on a cold and grey autumn afternoon. The floral notes do call to mind the appearance of a dried Victorian funeral wreath, preserved for perpetuity in a deep and ornate frame. All this imagery might give the impression that this is a deep gothic scent, yet it couldn't be farther from it. The bright green notes evoke the feeling of sitting by a window watching pouring rain, as the smell of a dew dappled garden is blown in by a gentle breeze. If "de profundis" refers to a call from the depths of emotion, then the Serge Lutens interpretation involves a sort of hopefulness embodied by the bright green notes that have been included in this complex fragrance.

De Profundis is a perfume for one who does not mind being alone, or more aptly being alone with their thoughts. It is an indulgent and somber perfume created for those who love a fragrance that tells a story, and builds upon the initial intrigue as the notes develop against warm skin.

Have you had the opportunity to smell the Serge Lutens masterpiece, De Profundis? What is the most complex fragrance in your collection?

#DareToBare This Spring & Summer with Nivea's Skin Firming Hydration Body Lotion

*This post contains PR samples.

One of my biggest beauty concerns as a cold climate dweller when spring finally begrudgingly blossoms into summer is the state of my wintery skin. For upwards of six months my skin is as dry as a desert and covered by layers and layers of winter clothing. When warmer weather does make an appearance (which often happens quickly) and the time comes to bare my gams, I'm left scrambling to get my skin in summer ready condition. All of this, of course, while staring longingly at the beautiful selection of summer sun dresses in my closet that I've been dying to wear for months!

Fortunately for me, Nivea came to the rescue this year with their #DaretoBare challenge. Several weeks ago the brand contacted me and asked if I'd like to participate and try a bottle of their Skin Firming Hydration Body Lotion with Q10. As a skin care junkie I was excited, but as a girl desperate for warmer temperatures, a wardrobe shake up involving shorter hemlines and perfect skin to pair with those dresses I jumped at the opportunity! I've been exclusively using Nivea's Skin Firming Hydration Body Lotion for two weeks with no plans to stop anytime soon. In the process, I've gotten a few friends hooked and am actively trying to convert my mother.

Particularly when temperatures rise and I need to kick my moisturizing routine into high gear to prep my legs for sundress season, my primary focus is the hydration and overall appearance of my legs. Unlike many I don't look for a lotion with the aim of tanning or bronzing my complexion, rather I want a product that can deliver firm, healthy and moisturized skin. Nivea's Skin Firming Hydration Body Lotion delivers ... and then some.

Nivea's firming and moisturizing lotion has a pleasant scent that dissipates not long after application and doesn't irritate my sensitive skin. Rather than focusing on the fragrance, what I notice immediately after application is the feeling that my skin is quenched, not just moisturized. What's more, this feeling stays with me well into the following day! Though my skin is already relatively firm (please remember that I am still quite young and also physically active), I've noticed an improvement in the overall resilience of my skin. What I mean by this is that my skin is less apt to dry out quickly, and appears somewhat more plump as far as moisture is concerned. I view both results as unquestionable benefits whether I'm wearing shorts or a dress as I can leave the house in the morning without the fear that my legs will appear dry by noon.

Wedges: Merona for Target (old collection)

I'm thrilled by my experience with Nivea's Skin Firming Hydration Body Lotion and look forward to the undeniable benefits for my skin as the late spring gives way to the sizzling summer. As seasons change and the weather heats up, are you ready to #DaretoBare?

Seven Things Sunday

After enjoying the first truly summery Sunday of the year, I'm enjoying sitting back with an iced tea (no sugar!) and reflecting on my current non-beauty favorites. It's no secret that I often wish Getting Cheeky had a bit more breadth, so these Seven Things Sunday posts offer the perfect forum for me to ramble about all things from cooking to clothing! Here I sit once again, typing out yet another list of items I'm loving, liking or (very rarely) disliking.

One. Sirop de Violette, a success!
After reading this post on one of my favorite fragrance blogs, Bois de Jasmin, I knew I had to make violet syrup out of the thousands that grow in our yard each year. I spent a considerable period of time on Saturday harvesting hundreds of violets, then separating the petals from the green area where the flower meets the stem. After steeping the flowers for twenty-four hours, I strained out the petals and mixed sugar into the liquid over a double boiler. The result is an incredibly beautiful syrup colored not unlike Serge Lutens De Profundis, perfect for desserts and cocktails aplenty!

Two. Warm weather ... and the clothes that accompany it.
I've long said that I'm an "in between" girl where temperate and style are concerned. I love layering, but like almost everyone else I dislike how bulky clothing grows during the winter ... particularly in my arctic climate! I'm therefore thrilled to report that warm weather has finally arrived where I am. I can layer to my hearts content, pairing dresses with my leather jacket among other favorite combinations!

Three. Mr. Selfridge
It's been weeks since the new show Mr. Selfridge premiered, and each week I fall more in love. From the plot, to the retail history involved I believe I may like Mr. Selfridge even more than Downton Abbey ... shock, horror. I can't help but associate with and utterly adore Miss. Towler, though the conniving and subtly powerful Lady May is also a favorite. Have I mentioned that I adore the many shots of perfume?

Four. A trip to IKEA
IKEA is a bit of a drive from where I live, so making the trip is always a greatly anticipated event for my husband and I. My sister is moving into her very own place in a few weeks, so we volunteered to take her on her very first trip to IKEA. As much of a cliché that it now is, there's nothing more fun and inspiring than picking out fun new pieces there.

Five. The new A Beautiful Mess app!
I absolutely adore the blog A Beautiful Mess, so when Elsie and Emma announced that they'd created a photo editing app for iPhone I counted down the moments until it was released. Full of characteristic A Beautiful Mess style, easy to use and completely compatible with Instagram (my addiction) this app has fast become a new favorite!

Six. Quality over quantity.
For months my wish list has been nonexistent at best. Though I've had a few passing fancies (I still think I'd like a Guerlain bronzer and Kevyn Aucoin's Celestial Powder in Candlelight) I have neither purchased unnecessary makeup nor have I wanted to. This month, though, I did treat myself to two quite extravagant non-makeup items that made not splurging on silly little things just make sense. Do you hear that swish? It's the sound of me turning a new leaf.

Seven. A few wonderful blog posts as always ...
As a budding perfume-ista, I can't help but gravitate to Charleston Girl's post about new fragrances on her blog, Best Things in Beauty
This post about lilacs on Paris in Four Months makes me miss visiting French markets on Sunday mornings.
Have I mentioned how much I love French fashion blogger Hello It's Valentine? This outfit is an inspiration to me, as are all the looks she posts!

Getting Cheeky's Top Five: Base Products

Every month I look forward to coming up with a selection of products I'd like to feature in the newest installment of Getting Cheeky's Top Five. Though I often struggle to narrow my favorites down to just five, I feel this series gives you a good idea of my taste where very specific categories are concerned. If you'd like to take a look at my favorites from the beginning and learn a bit more about what products I can't be without, feel free to take a peek at my favorite blushers, eye shadows, lipsticks, lip glosses or highlighters here.

I must admit that up to this point it's been quite easy to come up with selections to feature. But now that the big ticket items like blush and eyeshadow have been addressed, I'm struggling to think of sets of five! Though base products are considerably less exciting than some of the other collections I've written about, I cannot deny their importance. As far as I'm concerned no single kind of cosmetic is more important. Without a well executed base the cat eyes, pink cheeks or bright red lips I so love to wear just wouldn't look right!

MAC Nubile Paint Pot
MAC's Paint Pots are not something I talk about frequently on Getting Cheeky which is ironic as they are the single product form MAC that I use the most. Urban Decay's Primer Potion and Too Faced's Shadow Insurance have never worked for me as I do not have oily lids. However popular these products may be they tend to make my shadow feel sticky. Paint Pots, on the other hand, are perfect for my skin type and coloring as they even out the complexion of my eyelid while providing the perfect base for shadows. I have long since used up Painterly and am in the process of doing the same with Nubile (which was released with a limited edition collection) before I repurchase.

YSL Le Touche Éclat 01 Luminous Radiance
Le Touche Éclat is unquestionably a cult product that also made an appearance in my post about my top five highlighters! Though I love to use this around my brows to add definition and on my cheekbones every now and then, I most frequently use 01 Luminous Radiance when I just haven't gotten enough sleep. I apply this over the most blue areas of my under eyes after my normal concealer routine to add light reflection to the mix. I find that it gives the optical illusion of wide awake eyes ... even if I don't feel as perky as I look!

Le Métier de Beauté Classic Flawless Finish Concealer Shade 1
I have yet to meet a Le Métier product that has disappointed me, and their Classic Flawless Finish Concealer is no exception. I purchased this on a whim at the counter last fall and have fallen head over heels in love. Intensely pigmented without feeling dry or creasing hours after application, I refer to this as the "big guns." There is quite literally nothing this concealer cannot cover which makes it a dark circle sufferer's best friend.

Bourjois Healthy Mix Concealer 51 Éclat Clair
I absolutely adore the Healthy Mix range by Bourjois. Both the original and serum formulations of the foundation are incredible (I used both to the very last pump), and the concealer is out of this world. I would agree with what I've read on other blogs: the Healthy Mix concealer is among the most hydrating I own. Both on the under eye area and on various spots of redness on my face, this Bourjois gem blends in and hides whatever is thrown in its path. My only quibble? It's not available in the States meaning that I often have to search high and low online before I finally have another tube in my clutches.

Giorgio Armani Maestro Fusion Makeup 3.0 (Original Review Here
What can I say about my favorite foundation that hasn't already been said on Getting Cheeky? As far as I'm concerned Giorgio Armani changes the game where cosmetic textures are concerned. From smooth as suede creme blushes to lipsticks that feel light as air on the lips, this brand consistently pushes the envelope and does it successfully. After using this foundation for six months I tried to switch ... and failed. I am a convert for life.

Like the Waters off a Tropical Shore: Chanel Le Vernis 657 Azuré

As I mentioned in my review of a polish that I now simply refer to as "my precious" (Chanel 583 Taboo, here), there is no other polish brand that gets me quite as excited as Chanel. Spawning full fledged color trends and countless drugstore imitations, I anticipate each and every collection and find myself without fail walking away with at least one per release. The Summer 2013 collection is certainly no different, and though I still feel called to 667 Bel-Argus, the shade that most captured my attention (and the attention of polish lovers everywhere) was 657 Azuré.

Just as Taboo quite literally looks like the night sky with all its mysteries contained within one bottle, Azuré emulates the pristine and shimmering turquoise waters of a tropical beach. Courting the light, this versatile and incredibly shiny shimmer polish verges on metallic and begs to be worn on hot summer nights.

Chanel's infamous "invisible glitter/shimmer" (that shows up in the bottle but not on the nail) is not a problem in Azuré. Silver, turquoise and indigo shimmer appear suspended as if by magic to create an incredibly unique metallic blue that is nearly reflective. Far more runny than Taboo, Azuré approaches opacity in one coat but reaches its full shimmery potential at two. I do not have a problem with the wear time of Chanel polishes, but as always I would recommend that you pair this polish with your favorite base and top coat to be certain it lasts as long as possible.

Once Azuré has dried on the nails in normal lighting conditions, the shade appears exactly as it does in the bottle (a huge plus in my book as that is often my only disappointment where Chanel's vernis are concerned). However, in low light or when viewed at an angle a magical indigo cast appears.

I'm head over heels for this perfect summer shade and cannot wait to pair 657 Azuré with warm nights and long days at the beach, though any day is a good day for a Chanel polish! Azuré seems to be the most popular of the Summer 2013 collection, so be sure to snap this shade up quickly if it tickles your fancy as Azuré, Bel-Argus and Lilis are limited edition.

Have you tried Chanel's Azuré? Which shade from the summer collection was your favorite?
