Birchbox: Why It's Worth It

I've heard a lot of debating about whether Birchbox is worth it or not. Whether it's a disappointment. And if it's simply a flash in the pan. I'm here not to refute those discussions, but to share my two cents.

When I spend $10 a month on something, I don't expect much. Let's face it, $10 won't even buy you a MAC eyeshadow in pan form. I don't want to offend anyone, as everyone is certainly allowed their own opinion and feelings: but I thought the point was to try deluxe samples of different products. I've heard people complaining that the products aren't large enough ... but I've frequently been surprised when I receive full size items. The bottom line is this: it's a sample service, and for $10 a month you're not going to receive the inventory of a Sephora.

Below is my June Birchbox. Do I love everything in it? No. And to me, that makes it all the more worth it.

Kate Spade Twirl, Laura Geller Blush and Brighten in Apricot Berry, Xen Tan lotion Dark, Kiehls lotion sample, Herban Essentials towlettes

Most of the mini items don't just provide me with a nice way to sample something I may not have thought to buy for myself, but they come in handy when I least expect it. The Kiehl's lotion, for instance, is something I already use. When I opened the box I thought, "what a perfect size bottle for traveling!" I'm not a tanner, so the Xen Tan might be a fun blog post/experiment, and the Herban Essentials Towlettes are just plain handy no matter what anyone says.

... and then every once in awhile you get a jem. A few months ago I received a full sized package of Ahava Dead Sea Bathing Salts in the same Birchbox that I received a full sized (enormous) Pangea Organics Lip Balm.

And this month my jaw dropped when I pulled out Laura Geller's Blush and Brighten in Apricot Berry a WONDERFUL mineralized blush that I've used every day since it arrived. (The lovely Ebru of Ebruska's Makeup Bag received a different shade, and reviewed here.)

I certainly don't like everything that comes to me, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't sometimes disappointed ... but to me that's what makes Birchbox fun. I've learned what I like, discovered new products, and have had a makeup addict's grab bag to look forward to once a month.

I certainly don't think it's for everyone, and some may prefer to save their monthly pennies for larger beauty purchases. For me though, it's more than worth it!
