Lipstick Bandits: The Search for a Universal Lipstick

The idea for this month's Lipstick Bandits post is simple: we wanted to go on a quest for a universal lipstick. Being that we are a group of women with varying skin tones the thought that we might all purchase one shade and put it to the test was particularly alluring. As I write this for you I have not yet seen the posts and pictures of my fellow Bandits, but from my own experience with the lipstick we've selected I think we may have achieved what we sought out to do.

Tracy of Beauty Reflections proposed an iconic and universally admired lipstick shade: MAC's Lustre Finish Viva Glam V. I've heard nothing but compliments about this shade, but for whatever reason I did not yet own it. Thank heavens for the Lipstick Bandits or I wouldn't own this lipstick myself!

MAC describes Viva Glam V as a "neutral pink with pearl," but to my eye that description is a bit simplistic. The shade is, in fact, a neutral pink but what MAC terms "pearl" I would describe as a rich, diffused rose gold shimmer. The shimmer is pronounced enough that it's noticeable on my lips (e.g. slightly gritty) but the effect is worth putting up with a slightly less than smooth lipstick.

I've long had a slight prejudice toward MAC's Lustre Finish lipsticks as I believed they would exaggerate dry spots on my lips. Though that may be true of the others as I have not tested many, Viva Glam V is marvelously flattering. In my mind this renders it universal in more ways than one as us dry skinned girls are not prevented from wearing it.
Though I have quite naturally plump lips to begin with, the shimmer also seems to add to the full lipped appearance.

I've been enamored with well executed base makeup, subtle eyes, and bright lips or cheeks this spring,  but on the days I've opted for a more classic look Viva Glam V has been the shade I've favored on my lips.

MAC Viva Glam V

I certainly wouldn't say this of every color, but I truly feel as though MAC's Viva Glam V would be a universally flattering lipstick. On the lightest of complexions to the deepest of skin tones I can't imagine Viva Glam V looking anything but stunning and flattering.

You be the judge: have the Lipstick Bandits found a universal lipstick?
