Ready to Shine with Essie Winter 2012

Essie's collections always seem to be a bit unexpected, but arguably on trend. In a world where brands pump out predictable color collections for every holiday from Halloween to Christmas it's exciting to see Essie set the pace in terms of color and texture. Last year's Winter collection from Essie saw the release of periwinkle shades like Bangle Jangle, deep navy, teal and berry red creme polishes.

Essie's Winter 2012 collection is absolutely incredible. Featuring brilliant vermillions, an electrified teal, illuminated cobalt and two metallic shades it's unexpected but undeniably wintery. Of the bunch I gravitated toward three shades: Butler Please, Leading Lady and Beyond Cozy.

A year or two ago pale blues were the thing, so much so that actually I wrote an early blog post about the large collection of baby, powder and sky blue shades I'd amassed. Butler Please is one of many shades that seems to be ushering in the popularity of darker blue. Described by Essie as an "indulgent bright blue," the shade is a light from within cornflower that applies like a dream and looks very creamy on the nails.

Of the collection, Leading Lady is the most predictable "holiday" polish. Described as a "supreme deep red with glitter" the shade is the quintessential Christmas party manicure in a bottle. Deep pieces of garnet glitter are suspended in a ruby gel creating a glitter polish that is easy to apply, long lasting and surprisingly easy to remove.

Beyond Cozy is a winter shade that I couldn't pass up. Essie's "decadent silvery gold glitter" is the perfect companion to any lazy day sweater and leggings outfit. The polish is beautiful and looks like pure glitter on the nails in just two coats. Somehow Beyond Cozy manages to avoid being over the top, and I adore that it's neither gold nor silver. This baby is going to be on my nails a lot this winter!
