The Lipstick Bandits: Rose Romance

The Lipstick Bandits love an excuse to pull out our favorite lip products, particularly when that excuse involves a theme. Though Valentine's Day is all about romance, it's also about getting dolled up and for us, of course, that involves lipstick. For this installment of the Lipstick Bandits series we thought we would share our take on "romantic" lips. Though nothing is more romantic than a moisturized, kissable pout we just can't resist the excuse to show off our favorite rosy pinks and crimson reds.

Though I don't wear pink lipstick too often, I absolutely adore the look of red lips. However, I wear red lips with my signature black winged liner frequently and I wanted the opportunity to do something a little bit more special. When I think about looking classically romantic, I'm often inspired by imagery from the Rococo period. Bursting with pastoral pastel colors and shades of pink, the art of the era seems perfectly suited to the Valentine season. And of course, despite her faults (and those of the entire ruling class who popularized her look) who can ignore the queen of the Rococo period, Marie Antoinette herself. Inspired by this Joseph Ducreux portrait and this image for a modern take on her classic look, I decided to create my own very Lipstick Bandit rendition of Marie Antoinette for our Valentine's Day look.

Obviously as this is a Lipstick Bandits post it's all about the lips. I've recently rediscovered an old favorite: Dior's Dior Addict Lip Glow. This magical balm adjusts to your pH to create a custom shade of juicy bright pink. I've also discovered that Dior's Lip Glow layers with other products to magnificent effect. Coupled with my favorite red, Guerlain's Coque d'Or Rouge Automatique, it creates a moisturized, kissable soda pop red that I absolutely adore.

If I'd planned more carefully I would have invested in some better hair powder for my Marie Antoinette look, but as it stands I'm quite pleased with my modern taken on a much maligned loved historical figure. Though I would never wear the whole shebang out for a Valentine's date night, the luminous rosy pommettes (apples of the cheek/cheekbone in French) and kissable soft red lips are elements of the classic Rococo look that scream romance to me.
