I am far from a pastels girl 90% of the year. From clothing to makeup, there is just something about pale "spring" hues that do not work for me. And yet, my inclinations seem to change when the gloominess and chill of spring where I live finally gives way to early summer warmth and flowers. I find myself newly inspired by their fragrance and always their perennially optimistic colors. I have always loved flowers (how could you not?!), and am fortunate enough to live near an enormous bed of poppies that bloom each year, have copious amounts of lilies of the valley and lilacs in my yard and have just welcomed home three enormous new peony plants. Needless to say, I need look no further than my front or back yard for inspiration at this time of year.
Just as these perennial flowers rise from the ground not long since covered in melted snow each year, my color palette seems to shift suddenly from bold shades and thick winged liner to more subtle hues that mirror the delicate petals of seasonal blooms. Perhaps my favorite pale lip colors, luminous orchid purple and glowing, subtly shimmering shades of pink seem perfectly suited to the season.

Similarly, my taste in products for cheeks and eyes undergoes a change. Inspired by the dew dappled flower beds and blades of grass each morning I cannot get enough of highlighters. Though this is a year round favorite, it seems particularly appropriate in the early summer. I most often pair shimmering and soft shadow shades with thick yet natural black lashes and luminous, rosy cheeks.
