Getting Cheeky's Top Five: Lip Balm

Despite the fact that I've been steadily running out of makeup "mainstays," I look forward to coming up with a selection of products I'd like to feature in the newest installment of Getting Cheeky's Top Five each month. Although I often struggle to narrow my favorites from any category down to just five, I feel this series gives you a good idea of my taste where very specific categories are concerned. If you'd like to take a look at my favorites from the beginning and learn a bit more about what products I can't be without, feel free to take a peek at my favorite blusherseye shadowslipsticks, lip glosses or highlighters, and base products here.

From the genesis of this blog, I believe I've made it abundantly clear that I'm completely obsessed with lip balm. There are many reasons for this. It's inexpensive (*cough* or very expensive, but don't tell my husband), a handbag essential and something I can't be without ... after all my lips are dry 90% of the time. Most of all, I love the wide variety of lip balms available from store to store and country to country. No matter where I'm traveling you can always be assured that I'll come home with more than a few new treats to enjoy.

Aesop Rosehip Seed Lip Cream
Aesop's Rosehip Seed Lip Cream is among my all time favorite skin care products across the board. This velvet smooth cream sinks into the lips almost immediately for instant hydration that you can feel, rather than see (I dislike it when lip products look too greasy). I love layering this under lipstick because it absorbs right away and doesn't interfere with pigmentation, but also underneath more emollient balms for an added kick of moisture. The plus with any Aesop product is the heavenly, spa like scent.

La Roche Posay Ceralip
La Roche Posay's Ceralip is my morning must have. Each day before I apply my makeup I slick Ceralip on and let it sink in, a routine that preps my lips for lipstick or gloss and softens them for the day. Though I find that this lip conditioner is definitely too emollient to be paired directly with pigmented lip products, it's ideal to prep my pout for other products.

Caudalie Soin des Lèvres
Caudalie Soin des Lèvres is unquestionably the thickest lip balm I own. Though it can be a bit too much during warm weather when my lips are more inclined to stay moisturized, it's ideal during cooler weather when dry air, seasonal allergies and eczema conspire to ravage my lips and make it difficult to wear colored lip products. Soin des Lèvres is indispensable during the winter because it's thick and in tube form (a rare combination as far as I'm concerned) which makes it ideal for quick application on the go.

Nivea Vanilla & Macadamia Nut Lip Butter
I've tried lip balms from high end skin care brands such as La Mer, but none of the $50 balms top Nivea's $3 Lip Butter! Nivea's Lip Butter is subtly scented, incredibly moisturizing and works very well along with Aesop's velvety deep moisturizer to banish any flaky skin and redness left behind by eczema. After only three weeks I'm almost halfway through my first pot! The cute pink raspberry Butter is next on my drugstore wish list.

NUXE Rêve de Miel Lip Balm
I'm sure I don't have anything to say about NUXE's Rêve de Miel balm that hasn't already been said as this item was number one in the French pharmacie product craze. This citrus scented honey based balm applies with a matte finish that pairs wonderfully with lipstick. Despite its ideal texture for wear underneath cosmetics, I find that I prefer this at night. I apply Rêve de Miel just before heading to bed and it remains on my lips when I wake up in the morning.

By Terry Or de Rose (Original Review Here)
Although this balm is the sixth in a post that is supposed to focus on five, I couldn't leave out the incredibly luxe shimmery balm that merges the functionality of a moisturizer with the shimmer of a lip gloss. Naturally I wouldn't expect anything less from By Terry, but the subtle golden shimmer looks wonderful on the lips and gives them a full appearance even when they're at their most dry. Or de Rose is my favorite on "no makeup" makeup days when I prefer balm on my lips, but want a little added luxe shimmer.
