Getting Cheeky's Top Five: Red Lipstick

 *This post contains PR samples.
Despite the fact that I've been steadily running out of makeup "mainstays," I look forward to coming up with a selection of products I'd like to feature in the newest installment of Getting Cheeky's Top Five each month. Although I often struggle to narrow my favorites from any category down to just five, I feel this series gives you a good idea of my taste where very specific categories are concerned. If you'd like to take a look at my favorites from the beginning and learn a bit more about what products I can't be without, feel free to take a peek at my favorite blusherseye shadowslipsticks, lip glosseshighlighters, base products or lip balms here.

Being that I adore a good fire engine red lip, and my husband can't get enough of a classic pinup colored pout it's somewhat astonishing that I haven't written about red lipsticks as a part of this series! Unfortunately it may be relatively boring, as I favor a very specific kind of scarlet when it comes to my lipstick. Bright, yellow based (with the exception of one) and moisturizing I have quite the repertoire to turn to when I want a good red lipstick.

Tarte Glamazon Pure Performance 12 Hour Lipstick Fierce (Original Review
I proudly proclaimed in my original review of this lipstick that it is my favorite red, and I believe that remains true. I have never encountered such a flawless formula: it leaves my lips feeling better than they did before I applied, and the no-budge yet highly pigmented color makes for fool proof wear. If I plan to wear red lips for a long period of time (at work for instance) I always turn to Fierce as it stays on and keeps its initial plump, hydrated appearance throughout the day.

Tom Ford Wild Ginger Lipstick (Original Review)*
In terms of color, Tom Ford's Wild Ginger has to be my favorite. Where almost all of Tom Ford's lipsticks are concerned a little goes a long way. I find that Wild Ginger is best applied with a lip brush starting at the center of the lips and carefully working outward as I blend. Though the formula isn't quite as perfect as Tarte's marvel, Tom Ford's is exceptionally smooth and hydrating for such a pigmented product.

Revlon Strawberry Suede Lipstick (Original Review)
I quite recently reviewed Strawberry Suede, so I don't now have much more to say than I did earlier this week. The berry inspired shade made the cut because (whatever you may say) the lipstick is possessed of a relatively unique hue of red: as though someone mixing paints added in a hint of white to make a fire engine shade softer and more creamy in appearance. Strawberry Suede's texture also helps it stand out as this is the sole example of a matte yet comfortable lipstick that I can boast in my collection.

MAC Barcelona Red (Frost) Lipstick
Say what you will about frost lipsticks, I rather like the look as long as it's not fuchsia. Barcelona Red is also an exception to the rule, as its frost qualities tend to make it glisten on the lips like a gloss/lipstick hybrid rather than appear to have traveled in time from the late eighties. From what I understand this lipstick is quite hard to find, though I had no trouble finding it when last I was in Paris. (Perhaps it's exclusive to Europe?) Barcelona Red can be best described as a creamy bisque red, and is a favorite that I use quite sparingly given its rarity.

Chanel Rouge Allure Laque Dragon
What post about red lipsticks would be complete without the grande dame of all crimson lipsticks, Chanel's now discontinued Rouge Allure Laque in Dragon. Although I'm not entirely enamored with the formula that is reminiscent of YSL's glossy stains, Dragon has no equal where color is concerned. When I want a va-va-voom red, I turn to this tube time and time again. I'm uncertain what I'll do when I've used it up!

As promised, with the exception of Chanel's Dragon the selection of red lipsticks I've gathered is relatively uneventful. I have discovered a shade that works for my complexion and I've been unable to think outside of that box!
