Beach or Poolside Essentials Fit for an End of the Summer Day

*This post contains PR samples.
For many of us summer is drawing to a close, but at least where I live there are a few good weeks left during which I intend to spend as much time outside as possible (despite the fact that I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of the first true autumn day). Though I don't live on the coast, I'm lucky enough to live both next to an enormous body of water dotted with sandy beaches and near dozens of smaller lakes and rivers fit for lazy summer days.

For this reason I have a particularly carefully selected list of beach or poolside essentials that I cannot be without when I'm near any combination of the following three elements: direct sun, sand or water.

I'm quite fair skinned so sun protection is an unquestionable essential, but like most beach and pool lovers I do like to indulge in a bit of basking (if only for the warmth). La Roche-Posay Anthelios sunscreens are my favorite in all forms (cream, spray, high and low SPF factors). My skin happens to be quite sensitive to ingredients in traditional sun block, but La Roche-Posay always manages to protect my pale complexion without causing a breakout of catastrophic proportions. It wouldn't be a day at the beach without the smell of NUXE's cult dry oil, Huile Prodigieuse. Though the golden shimmering version is also lovely if you're looking to spice things up a bit, I go for the original incarnation post beach or pool as much for the smell as for its moisturizing properties.

Though a hat and a cute bikini are also must haves, I also wouldn't think of relaxing in the sun without a "brain candy" beach read. It's a well documented fact here on Getting Cheeky (and everywhere else for that matter) that I love my classics, but Tolstoy's War and Peace just doesn't seem quite right when everyone surrounding you is playing beach volleyball, no? This summer I've been enjoying India Knight's Mutton** and Sinéad Moriarty's This Child of Mine* both of which have made me laugh and cry and have served as perfect water side companions.

Penguin Books UK has generously offered three copies of each book as a prize for Getting Cheeky readers who are anxious to make the most of the last weeks of summer and hit the beach or pool. Please use the widget below to enter. Good luck!

*Please note that I am well aware that India Knight has made some rather *ahem* below the belt comments about blogs recently. To me this does not signify. As long as she's not offended by being featured on a blog, I will choose not to be offended by her comment that I have decided to interpret as an off the cuff statement not meant to offend. Kapeesh?
