A Girly Afternoon at Chicago's Blowtique

There is just something about having your hair styled that's relaxing and as luxurious as a good massage. While a cut and color are a fun way to change your overall look, the blow-out bar trend means that we don't have to be fully committed to a new color or style to have the excuse to visit the salon for the afternoon. For any hair styling needs from special events like weddings and parties to those "just because" treats, blow-out bars are a fun and girly way to play with your hair in the talented hands of a professional stylist.

Blowtique is just such a chic blow-out salon in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood that offers a selection of blow outs and up-dos (in addition to a braid bar, how brilliant?!) from a boutique menu. The ethos here is simple: blowouts should be "as convenient and as accessible as a polish change." Services range from basic blow-outs to full scale up-dos and are priced between $35 to $75 dollars. For not much more than the cost of a high end manicure, Blowtique offers an incredible shampoo and styling experience coupled with friendly and knowledgeable staff. In short, it's the perfect way to spend your afternoon for fun or to prepare for a big event. I would know: this afternoon my Mom and I visited Blowtique during a girl's day out.

Blowtique's interior is as stylish and approachable as their storefront. Soft, feminine and glamorous the salon offers a standard styling floor in addition to a decked out lower level dedicated to soirĂ©es for groups ranging from girls nights to wedding parties. Beyond the stylish appearance I was excited to discover that Blowtique stocks Oribe, the new darling of the styling world. Before my services even began I made sure to acquaint myself with the product selection and later treated myself to a few of the items used on my hair during my blow-out before leaving.

After checking in my lovely stylist for the afternoon, Rhona (who also happens to be Blowtique's Creative Director), chatted with me about the style I was looking for and my plans for the rest of the day. I was impressed that Blowtique took our final destinations into account. Apart from a luxe afternoon of pampering and an evening with friends, I didn't have much on the books. I often find myself at a salon watching my hair style rapidly grow either too overdone or underdone to suit my plans, so I was overjoyed that Rhona and other talented stylists took this into account.

I'm very low maintenance about my hair and love nothing more than playing on the natural wave I already have to create laid back but glamorous beach waves. So it follows that I requested soft, Hollywood waves during my initial chat with Rhona. Following an incredible shampoo and a blow-dry Rhona gave me (and I'm not kidding) the best blow-out I've had in my entire life. I asked for glamorous waves and she delivered! Perfect for an afternoon filled with shopping in the city, but just glamorous enough to make me feel special. Not only that, but we had a much needed girl talk session!

Following an afternoon at Blowtique this girl was thrilled. Not only did I leave in a wonderful mood (which is always the mark of an excellent salon experience), but I also got to bring my new favorite accessory with me: beachy, red carpet waves. I wasn't the only thrilled customer. While taking photographs of my wavy blow-out in front of Blowtique a group of beautiful women who'd just had their hair styled for a wedding were raving about the professionalism and the skill of the stylists. Just as this group of girlfriends promised each other they'd be back, I made the same promise to myself!

Ladies of Chicago, these girls know their blowouts!
