Fire Walk With Me: Inspired By Twin Peaks

If beauty blogs (or any blogs, for that matter) existed during the early nineties, the posts all surely would have discussed one particular cultural phenomenon: Twin Peaks. This bizarre and at times hard to follow two season series that first aired during the spring of 1990 was the show of the moment. Highly talked about, at times highly controversial and now a perfect time capsule of early nineties fashion and makeup styles.

Every year during the late autumn I feel a sudden compulsion to watch the two seasons once again. Grey weather and references to the Pacific Northwest may make others think of Twilight, but while hiking through the woods yesterday on a quite grey and foggy day I couldn't help but think of the Twin Peaks theme song. Apart from the big hair and clothes that now make us say "huh?" the makeup featured on the show was the epitome of early nineties cool. Although I'm not willing to fully embrace some of the styles that now make me cringe, there's no reason we can't update the look for our own purposes almost twenty-four years later to pay homage to the sensation that was Twin Peaks.

Although the show is centered around the murder and double life of Laura Palmer whose photograph we see quite frequently throughout the episodes, I find myself most captivated by Donna Hayward (Lara Flynn Boyle) and Audrey Horne's (Sherilyn Fenn) makeup. Both perfect examples of the nineties' version of no makeup makeup, these characters often wore subtle shades of tan, mauve and brown paired with strong brows.

While we might be a bit more hesitant to pick up a tube of matte brown lipstick than beauty lovers would have been in 1990, the neutral cheeks, matte shadows and bold brows would be equally as at home today as they were on the screen in Twin Peaks.

Do you have favorite character from Twin Peaks? What look on the show most inspires your own makeup today?
